Publishing Terms for Beginners: G

Happy Friday 13th!

In today's post, we're looking at publishing terms that start with the letter G.

Galley proofs - a copy of the manuscript text used for checking before before final print runs or eBook formatting.

Genre - a specific category of books (eg. historical, romance, young adult, science fiction) used in book marketing.

Ghost writer - a writer contracted by another author or publisher to write or cowrite a book. The ghostwriter usually does not receive credit for their work on the publication (but they get paid - which is why they do it!)

Glossary - a list of terms and definitions particular to the subject of the book. (or a list of publishing terms, like in this blog series).

Gutter - a formatting term for the central blank area between left and right pages. In books, gutters are the inside margins toward the binding edge.

Can you think of any other terms starting with G that should be included here? Heard a term, and you're not sure what it means? Share your thoughts and questions in the comments section below.
