In this month's post in the series of Publishing Terminology, we're looking at words starting with the letter L.

Layout - the overall design of a book's pages, including the arrangement of text, illustrations, graphics, title, page numbers, and font/typeface usage.

Line editing - also known as copy editing. Line-by-line editing of a manuscript, concentrating on style, punctuation, spelling, grammar, flow, sequencing, clarity, consistency, and content errors.

Line editor - the person who performs an even more detailed than a typical copy edit. Line editors also consider the book's voice and phrasing, pacing, details and vocabulary. The line editor also corrects grammar, punctuation, spelling & style errors.

Literary Agent - an intermediary between the author and publisher. The agent is contracted by the author to represent them in business dealings, and to sell their work. The agent takes a commission of all work they bring in for the author as their payment.

List Price - also known as retail price. The cover price of a book, set by the publisher.
