Publishing Terms for Beginners: M

In this month's post in the series of Publishing Terminology, we're looking at words starting with the letter M.

Manuscript (ms) - the original version of a book as prepared by the author (either handwritten or typewritten) mss = manuscripts

Marketing - promotional & advertising efforts to sell a book. Something now required of all authors, whether indie or traditionally published.

Media kit - also known as a press kit. A pre-packaged kit containing your book cover image, book blurb, author picture, author biography, book excerpt, web links and buy links, as well as any other interesting and relevant information.

Metadata - information attached to digital data to enhance its searchability. This includes keywords, BISAC categories, titles, author names, book descriptions etc.

Middle grade - books written for children between the ages of about 8 to 12.

Midlist - books which have a chance of significant success but are not lead titles (ie. likely bestsellers). This term is also used to refer to authors who sell reasonably well but without spectacular success.
