Publishing Terms for Beginners: N
In this month's post in the series of Publishing Terminology, we're looking at words starting with the letter N.
New Adult - also known as NA. A new genre aimed at readers in their 20s which emerged about 5 years ago as YA readers (spawned by hits like the Twilight books) outgrew teen books and began looking fir reads more appropriate to their age and experience.
Networking - expanding one's social network or sphere of influence by initiating mutually advantageous relationships with other people.
Niche - a specialised target market characterised by a particular interest or subject (eg. Amish Romance). Niches are potentially profitable, but if a niche has too small a market, traditional publishers may be wary of publishing books in these categories.
Non fiction - 'true' writing in which the author re-tells actual events. eg. reference books, autobiographies, guides and manuals.
Novella - a work of fiction normally longer than a short story but shorter than a novel (roughly between 7,500 and 40,000 words)
